Strip position measurement, strip width measurement, strip run control

VRPD

High-precision radar sensors

Compact radar sensors positioned next to the strip detect the strip edges. VRPD operates with a combined transmit/receive antenna and uses millimeter-wave MMG (as 5G mobile networks and weather radars do). For high-precision distance measurement, VRPD uses a 20 GHz bandwidth in the 116–260 GHz frequency range.

This enables a very large measurement range. In combination with special beam focusing, the system achieves very high measurement accuracy: Strip edge detection ± 0.1 mm

The solutions:

  • Strip edge detection to determine strip position. Used in many flatness measurement systems as well as in strip run control, e.g., in annealing, pickling, or coating lines and many other applications

  • Width measurement system, even for wide strip applications (over 2000 mm)

  • Combined with a closed-loop Vollmer control system for unwind control, rewind control, strip center control, etc.

The advantages:

  • Highly accurate!
  • No components above the strip
  • No components below the strip
  • The system is robust and maintenance-free. Heavy steam does not interfere
